The fine art of toothpick sculptures

My artwork is made of and called "cure-dents", which is the French word for "toothpicks" in English.  I believe it describes my artwork better than something as simple and plain as "toothpick sculptures".

I am a native of Detroit, Michigan.  Before I started my career as an artist, I was into martial arts; tai-kung-fu, to be exact.  I embarked on that art in 1972, and got comfortable enough to teach it to others in 1975.  Unfortunately, I had to stop teaching others in 1985 due to some health problems.  So, I started looking for new outlets, and finally decided on entering the world of being an artist and sculptor.  I have since then been on the search for a special twist and uniqueness to my art form, and found it in tiny slivers of wood that people normally only think about and utilize after a meal.

When I am working on a sculpture, I envision a beautiful lady.  My artwork is very delicate and fragile.  I learned how to handle delicate and fragile things since i am first and foremost, a gentleman.  I believe that ladies do and will appreciate my cure-dent sculptures more so than men because when I am creating the sculptures, I had them in mind.

When I do have a sculpture in mind, I have an idea of what I want for it to look like, but I never really know for sure what the finishing product will look like until I finish it.  Sometimes it's different than what i had in mind when I started it, but they all turn out beautiful anyway.  I also do smaller sculptures, sculptures shaped like boxes, and my wall sculptures are beautiful as well.  I would really rather do life size sculptures, because I really get into them.  I have been showing my artwork in galleries since 1991.

I do not see my cure-dents sculptures as "work"; I enjoy doing them.  I always get something out of every piece that I do; I always seem to lose myself for hours at a time when I am concentrating on a sculpture.  When I am not working on a sculpture, i am always creating an idea for a new one, and it always must be different from the others.  I have created twenty five unique cure-dents sculptures, and there will be many more to come in the future.
